Rafael Flores Jr. is the Executive Director of Building Sustainable Borders (BSB) and worked as a Community Reinvestment Relationship Manager Consultant with several major banking institutions in the northeast region. He has worked with nonprofit organizations, small businesses, minority entrepreneurs and government agencies throughout New York and New Jersey. Mr. Flores serves as the liaison for several banking institutions assisting their business units with ensuring that low to moderate income communities have access to traditional financial services and products. As a CRA Officer, his position included keeping him in close contact with housing, education and other community-based organizations.
Rafael is a tireless volunteer, sharing his time on various projects through creating and implementing various volunteer initiatives. These activities include foreclosure prevention workshop, financial education, first-time homebuyer classes, such as the first Lenders Forum, assisting families to acquire pre-qualification approval for home loans, and foreclosure prevention initiatives,
Because of Rafael’s personal commitment to education, he brought together his community contacts and his professional resources to present what has become The New York Urban League’s Annual Historically Black College Fair. Presented in cooperation with The Children’s Aid Society, this event has helped more than 1,000 students gain admission to colleges throughout the United States.
Mr. Flores serves on the board of directors of Brand New Day in New Jersey, the Advisory Committee for the Children’s Aid Society Frederick Douglas Center, and is an advisor to Lead-Free Children, Inc., a multi-faceted humanitarian organization serving children in Washington Heights and the Dominican Republic.
Rafael has been a CRA Officer since 2002. Prior to that time he was a Community Development Officer with Dime Bancorp, serving the community in that capacity for six years. Mr. Flores has a Bachelors degree in Biology from Wilberforce University in Ohio and is currently working on his Masters in Community Development through New Hampshire University. Born in New York City, he resides in New Jersey with his wife and two children.
